What is Northgate
Northgate is a city in King County, Washington, United States. The population was 10,938 at the 2010 census. It is bordered by the city of Seattle on the west, Shoreline on the north, Lake Forest Park on the east, and Kenmore and Bothell on the south. Northgate is part of the Northshore School District.
The land that would become Northgate was first settled by homesteaders in the late 1800s. The area was platted as a community in 1906 and named for its location north of Seattle. The first school was built in 1907, and a general store and post office soon followed. In 1910, Northgate was annexed into the newly incorporated city of Seattle.
After annexation, Northgate remained a rural community with a few businesses and farms dotting the landscape. This began to change in the 1950s with the development of several housing tracts and the construction of Interstate 5, which bisected the neighborhood. In 1957, Northgate Mall, one of the first shopping malls in the country, opened its doors, further transforming Northgate into a suburban community.
Today, Northgate is a thriving urban village with a diverse mix of businesses and residents. The neighborhood is home to several parks and recreation facilities, as well as a variety of shopping and dining options. In 1975, four men founded Northgate. They were Doug Parker, Mike McKinnon, Gordon Campbell, and Randy Russell. Their goal was to provide quality, affordable housing for people in need.
